YOUR SATURDAY SEVEN

Compiled By: R.E. Martinez / August 7, 2021

This has been an interesting week of reading articles! I hope one of these articles will help you in some way! Don’t forget to read Dr. David Allen’s “Your Friday Five.” (7th on the list below) Enjoy Your Saturday Seven!

1. REFLECTIONS ON SPURGEON’S PASTORAL LIBRARY. (Spotlight Article)

By: Forrest Strickland, 8.2.21

Anyone who knows me well knows that I love books. I am a collector, reader, and sharer of excellent treasures. I read broadly, and often to my own demise in areas of opinion, theology, and time. This article I knew would be the spotlight article for Your Saturday Seven this week! An Excerpt: “And yet for all that, the one thing that ought not to be forgotten, Spurgeon warned, is that the celestial food of Scripture ought to be our all-encompassing delight. “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”

2. WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT?

By: Tim Challies, 8.4.21

I hope this article by Challies encourages you to be an encourager today. An Excerpt: “The sanctified instinct of the Christian heart should not be to discourage but to encourage, not to further demoralize other people but to give them strength, to give them heart, to give them courage. It is no virtue to add to the weight other people bear, but to come alongside them to share the heavy burdens they are already carrying.”

3. JESUS ROSE EARLY: WHAT MORNINGS SAY ABOUT US.

By: David Mathis, 8.5.21

I am changing in this area of my own life. I want to be an early riser, for many reasons. I long for that timeframe where nothing is able to distract or deter me from focusing on my time with the King of kings, and Lord of lords. What about you? Read this article, it will help you in some way I am sure. An Excerpt: “What we do first thing in the morning, over time, says a lot about our true priorities. In general, we have our best energy in the mornings, after we’ve just slept, once we’re fully awake. To what or to whom will we give the first fruits of each day’s time and attention? Over time, we learn to give our best energy to what matters most, what we can’t accomplish with compromised focus and energy, what we cannot afford to be sidelined by the onslaught of each day’s distractions.”

4. ARE WE REVERING GOD’S WORD IN A WAY THAT DENIES IT TO OTHERS?

By: Mard Ward, 8.5.21

Mark Ward has been a growing favorite author of mine to read. His book Authorized is a fantastic read, I highly recommend it. This article was a blessing to me on Thursday night. Here is an excerpt: “We rightly revere the Word of God. But it’s possible to revere it in such a way that we deny it to others, to sneer at their speech as only so much barbarian grunting. Give the word of God to the people. To all the families of the earth God wishes to bless.”

5. HOW TO ENJOY THE BIBLE IN SEMINARY.

By: Josh Rodriguez, 8.6.21

Here is an excellent article by one of our own members at Redemption Hill. Josh Rodriguez published this on Friday and I am certain that it will help you as it did me. An Excerpt: “It’s not a single Bible reading that perfects a saint, but a lifetime of walking with God in His Word.”

6. HOW TO DEAL WITH A FALLEN FRIEND.

By: David Teis, 8.6.21

This is a timely article and one that was a great reminder to me that anything that has happened to a brother is something that can happen to me. I am praying for you friend, please pray for me. An excerpt: “Read Hebrews 11, see the great leaders of the faith that died waiting for the promise we have received. Then look around you. It is true, in 46 years of ministry I have seen many preachers fail. I can tell you of many more preachers and Christian laymen who have finished their course well. Every Christian struggles with sin. Some are overcome. Their enemy is your enemy.”

7. YOUR FRIDAY FIVE.

By: Dr. David L. Allen, 8.6.21

Dr. David Allen compiles some really good articles each week and I have for eight weeks now provided the seventh of my own compilation of articles as Dr. Allen’s Friday Five. The third article on his list “How to use resources to preach well” by Christ Colquitt is one I highly recommend. While you jump over to Dr. Allen’s page be sure to add “Your Friday Five” to your list of reads each week!
